For a long time, fleece sweatshirts have triumphed on the market of warming clothing. What is behind this success? Is buying a fleece a good investment? What to pay attention to when buying?
A handful of history and theories
Polar was developed in 1979 at the American company Malden Mills. This company created the Polartec material, from which all subsequent products took their name. The company's goal was to create a material that would be warm and light at the same time - it was to contrast with thick wool and at the same time fulfill its properties. The created fleece has been additionally enriched with hydrophobic properties. Technological development has resulted in the expansion of features - now on the market we can find fleece of various thickness, quality and capabilities (windproof, sweat evaporation, quick drying, etc.).
The fleece is mainly made of plastics - mainly PET (one of the polyesters). Often, with specific models, we can find the markings "100", "200" or "300". This is the grammage of the material. For example, if the label says “Polar 100”, it means that 1 square meter of fabric weighs 100 grams.
Is it worth it?
Fleece is a good choice if we need insulation at work. Its knitted construction and the quality of the material allow for heat storage. Usually, the fleece is pleasant to the touch, which makes it more pleasant to use. Due to its hydrophobic properties, we don't have to worry about getting wet. Importantly - after contact with water, the fleece does not lose its properties - they are still water resistant. Fleeces with additional properties are even more convincing to buy - and rightly so. The challenges of working in various conditions mean that you should focus on comfort and health. And as you have probably already found out - a dozen or so layers of thick clothing do not provide comfort. Therefore, investing in a relatively thin fleece that will provide the same properties is a good decision. In addition, it does not wear out quickly - with proper maintenance it can be used for a long time.
Which fleece to choose?
When purchasing, it makes sense to look at more than the properties - these are very similar on most models. Therefore, when shopping, pay attention to what a given fleece offers you apart from the above-mentioned features. Small details can make a big difference. Example? Pockets. As if it is obvious, but we cannot always find them. And we all know how useful they are. It is similar with cuffs, which prevent cold air from getting under the clothes. A quick market analysis will allow you to make the best choice.
